Charming China, a large-scale documentary series on ethnic culture and arts, is China’s first-ever masterpiece demonstrating cultures, traditions and intangible heritages of 55 ethnic minorities in China. This feature documentary series comprehensively records world, national and provincial-level intangible cultural heritage elements in China. Consisting of three seasons, the documentary series are produced phase by phase, accompanied by English commentaries and Chinese subtitles. Each season include twenty 30-minute episodes. It will be completed and circulated in 2018.
The first season, launched in 2016, narrates and demonstrates cultures, traditions and intangible heritage elements of Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang, Qinghai, Ningxia and Gansu in northwest China. Over 30 intangible heritage elements, their transmitters and works are documented in this episode series, such as Mongolian Khoomei singing and horse-headed fiddle, Uyghur people’s Twelve Muqam and hawk taming, Reguong Tangka art and human-and-deity dance in Qinghai, embroidery and Hua’er art of Hui people, and Dunhuang Quzi Opera, Yugu folk songs, and South Gansu Tibetan Opera in Gansu.
